Magesi Football Club surprised everyone by winning the Carling Knockout Cup in their first season in the top flight of South African football. They have gotten off to a good start in defending their title.
They beat AmaZulu 3-2 in a five-goal thriller at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
The visitors got off to a quick start and took a 2-0 lead into halftime, thanks to goals from Kgomotso Mosadi and Abbey Junior Seseane in the first half.
However, AmaZulu were not to be outdone in their own stadium, coming out guns blazing in the second half. Athini Maqokola narrowed the deficit to one goal before Mlondi Mbanjwa scored the equalizer with 19 minutes left.
Lady Luck was still smiling on the defending champions, though, as a deflection off a set piece ended up in the back of the net, securing Magesi’s spot in the quarterfinals.
